Exploring the Tranquility of Hien Minh Teahouse
- Vietnam is a sanctuary for all tea lovers, and we say that for a reason! At Tea J Tea, we love exploring tea as much as we can. If you are familiar with our tea journey, you already know how we began to explore Vietnam, my origin country, and how I developed deep connections with my roots.
- This country offers countless types of teas produced in many different tea-growing regions. Therefore, it's justifiable to call Vietnam a true treasure island for tea explorers.
- This is yet another episode from our visit to Vietnam in 2022 - Hien Minh Teahouse.
The heart of Vietnam Artisan tea
- Hidden away in the bustling streets of Hanoi's heart, we discovered HienMinh Teahouse – a peaceful haven that took our breath away. The moment we stepped through its doors, the city's chaos melted into a gentle calm. This wasn't just another teahouse; it was a master creation by tea master Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung (winner of the Tea Master Cup 2016) and his wife, who founded this special place in 2016.

- What truly captivated us wasn't the elegant setting or impressive tea collection – it was the genuine passion that radiated throughout the space.
- I believe Hien-minh Teahouse was a fated discovery on our journey. After attending the World Tea Expo for the first time in 2022 and noticing that there wasn’t any representation of Vietnamese teas on the global stage, I gained a renewed appreciation and motivation to bring artisan Vietnamese tea into the U.S. market. I honestly didn’t even know where to start, so John and I booked a ticket to Vietnam that year, hoping to find some delicious Vietnamese teas that we could share. Hienminh Teahouse helped us fulfill this goal—and even more! Mr. Hung and Mrs. Yen’s passion for Vietnamese teas, along with their shared goal to showcase high-quality, Vietnamese-grown, and Vietnamese-processed tea, truly resonated with me. Mr. Hung’s enthusiasm shone in his eyes as he shared tea stories, while his wife moved with quiet grace during each preparation. At Hienminh, the tea culture wasn’t just displayed—it was lived, making us feel like welcome members of their tea-loving family.
Struggles of Vietnam’s Artisan Tea Culture: The Untold Story
- During the inception stages of the teahouse’s establishment, Mr. Hung and Mrs. Yen had to make many difficult decisions. The investors they planned to partner with wanted the teahouse to operate as a shop featuring Chinese imported teas as its main attraction. Within that same year, Mrs. Yen was pregnant, and they were soon expecting their first child. The easier decision was to follow the investors' recommendation to feature Chinese imported teas, which would ensure greater stability in the business strategy. The alternative pathway was to establish a wholly new brand identity for Vietnamese-made artisan tea without any investment partnership.
- The challenge in this path lay in the prevailing Vietnamese cultural ideology at the time, which regarded Thai Nguyen-style green tea as the "traditional" green tea flavor in the domestic market. By choosing this pathway, they knowingly faced an uphill battle both domestically and internationally. Moreover, with an unborn child on the way, their decision regarding the teahouse would also affect their child's future.
- Staying true to their cultural heritage, they decided to establish their own brand identity for producing Vietnamese artisan teas. Many more challenges ensued with this endeavor, but their fighting spirit, faith, and good nature always carried them through.

The Essence of HienMinh Teahouse
- What makes HienMinh Teahouse truly special, goes far beyond its walls. It's a place where Vietnam's ancient tea traditions are not just preserved, but cherished and given new life. Since opening in 2016, they've dedicated themselves to protecting and nurturing centuries-old tea trees, letting Buddhist wisdom guide their practice.
Their Crown Jewel?
- An extraordinary Lotus Green Tea that tells their whole story – each batch created through a beautiful marriage of their own lotus flowers and pristine mountain-grown snowshan tea. We learned that the tea master finds the perfect balance through meditation, making each cup more than just tea – it's liquid poetry.

A Journey Through Vietnamese Tea
- As we stepped into HienMinh Teahouse, we were immediately embraced by the gentle fragrance of fresh tea and soothed by the authentic Vietnamese décor surrounding us. I was amazed by their vast collection of Vietnamese teas – each one, we discovered, carried its own fascinating story and distinct character. We found ourselves on a sensory journey through Vietnam with every cup, from mesmerizing lotus green teas to subtle white teas harvested from ancient trees.
- Apart from this, their wild tea collection is truly a treasure trove to any tea lover. These precious leaves, we learned, are carefully picked by hand from centuries-old trees growing deep in Vietnam's forests. Sipping these rare teas, we could almost taste the history and spirit of the ancient forests they came from.

The Art of Tea Brewing
- At HienMinh, brewing tea isn't just about making a drink – it's pure artistry. We watched in fascination as the hosts, true masters of their craft, brought each tea to life with meticulous care and deep reverence. The way they handled the traditional Vietnamese teapots and moved through each step of preparation reminded me of an elegant dance, one that's been passed down through generations.
- What made our experience truly special was how they invited us into this ritual. They didn't just serve us tea; they shared their knowledge with genuine enthusiasm, teaching us about perfect water temperatures, precise brewing times, and why each piece of tea matters.
